Mobile electronics in the spotlight as global exhibitors gather for biggest tech trade fair

Enterprises from a host of countries producing innovative electronic, gift and home items will showcase their products at the world's largest trade show of its kind in Hong Kong this week.

Over 2,800 booths featuring the latest mobile devices, mobile AR/VR, wearables and mobile accessories will be set up at the four-day Mobile Electronics show, which will run from April 18 to 21 as part of Global Sources Exhibitions at AsiaWorld-Expo on Lantau Island.

Exhibitors from countries ranging from China, South Korea, Japan, Singapore and Switzerland to the United States will take part in product pavilions, experience zones with innovative products and special product launches highlighting the industry's achievements.

"From the start, our focus has been on establishing this event as a showcase for innovative mobile products from quality suppliers. That, in turn, has made us a must-attend event for top buyers around the world and has led us to become the largest industry-specific trade show in the world," said Tommy Wong, President of Global Sources Electronics Group.

While smartphones have become a "must-have" among city dwellers, those selling at a low cost and are of top quality are in big demand.

Handsets sporting a cutout on the upper side of the display screen have become common. Dual and triple lens cameras are just some of the hottest trends, while sensors that adapt to the environment are now also possible. Security functions like fingerprint scanners, facial and iris recognition are also becoming common in cellphones.

Visitors to the world's largest mobile electronics sourcing event will find the latest smartphones and tablets, mobile accessories, speakers and headphones. The Brand zone will also highlight 100 rising Chinese mobile electronics brands. The Wearable Products Gallery will feature innovative products from categories like sports, health and fashion tech.

Regardless of the advancement of smartphones, the gadget needs a transmission network to maximize efficiency and demonstrate its capabilities. The emerging wireless 5G system is still being prepared for consumer use, but its potential to provide blazing fast connection speeds for mobile devices positions it to be the next-generation wireless broadband technology solution.

While a mobile network allows users to connect without physical boundaries, virtual reality (VR) provides unlimited space for viewers to explore and day dream. At the Global Sources Mobile Electronics show, attendees will have the opportunity to try out the latest VR hardware and contents, such as sports and gaming, powered by HTC VIVE, at the Experience Zone.

If you're interested in the latest developments of the AR/VR industry, the fourth VR/AR/MR Ecosystem Summit will be something you can't afford to miss. Experts from Qualcomm, HTC, EmdoorVR and Invisionate will share their insights into the industry's future on April 19.

Global Sources is expected to attract more than 65,000 buyers from 150 countries and territories, including purchasers from Belkin, Best Buy, Foxconn, Google, Intel and NEC.

Co-located with the Mobile Electronics show, the Gifts & Home show will offer a curated collection of creative and innovative gifts, premiums and home products from China and across Asia.

New technologies

Products from appliances to furniture and from lights to pet feeders harness new technologies for users' convenience and functional comfort. There's a growing trend in products adopting Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connectivity, enabling easy and remote control using smartphones and other devices. Ergonomics finds its way and integrates therapeutic features in products used at home and on the go.

Some gifts and home products with innovative designs and functions will be awarded with Cool Design Awards, and the winners will be featured at the Cool Design Gallery. Social media influencers will host live demonstrations of cutting edge products from exhibitors at the Hot Product Demo Zone.

Focusing on new sourcing markets, a pavilion will be set up to showcase new and unique products, including those from emerging Asian sourcing markets such as Vietnam, Indonesia, India, the Philippines, Laos and Cambodia.

"The Global Sources Gifts & Home show attracts volume buyers from all over the world," said Cameron Walker, president of Global Sources Gifts, Home and Hardware Group.

According to the organizer, shoppers like Catch Group, Chemist Warehouse, Marks & Spencer, Walt Disney and many others are expected to attend the shows.

"Through our carefully designed pavilions and product zones, attendees can expect to find products to satisfy consumers' needs and technology that will change their lives for the better. They can also stay ahead of market trends and gain inspiration for sourcing next season," said Walker.

A wide range of services will also be available to help buyers source products online and offline. The show has strictly selected products from verified suppliers and more than 300 exhibitors that accept small orders.

A four-day Global Sources Summit will teach intermediate and advanced Amazon and e-commerce sellers how to source from Asia more effectively and sell online more profitably.

The Global Sources Fashion trade fair, which is the largest in Hong Kong displaying fashion products from China and across Asia, will be held from April 27 to 30.
